Chelangat crossed the finish line in 9: 01.03. Tsiyon Abebe of Ethiopia followed in a time of 9:03.85 taking the silver medal. Cherop also from Kenya came in third taking the bronze in a time of 9:05.98.

In the last two laps Chelangat was leading with Cherop following closely behind her. Abebe stuck on their shoulders not relenting.
Chelangat increased the pace at the bell forming a larger gap between her and Cherop.
Cherop began to tire off at the last lap and Adebe stormed passed her into second place but could not get to Chelangat who won the gold medal.
Kenya’s Teresia Muthoni won last year’s championships which were held in Nairobi, Kenya.
