Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has welcomed moved by President William Ruto to replace him as his tenure ends.

President Ruto in a gazette notice last week declared Chebukati’s position and that of two members vacant as of January 18th next year.
“Whereas, the tenure of the Chairperson and two members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is set to lapse on 17th January, 2023, having been appointed on the 18th of January, 2017,” reads government statement in parts.
Chebukati who stood firm in the August polls said that this will be one of a kind way of transition compared to the past.
“I wish to welcome the decision to gazette impending vacancies for the positions of IEBC Chairperson and 2 Commissioners which will officially be vacant from 18/1/2023. This will ensure smooth transition and retention of institutional memory which has previously not been the case,”he said.
The opposition led by Azimio chief Raila Odinga has been always against Chebukati and the manner in which he conducted himself during polls. The Azimio camp has been always calling the resignation of IEBC chair and two commissioners who were againsnt the breakaway commisioners.
On the other hand, Kenya Kwanza leaders want the breakway commissioners led by Cherera be punished for almost ‘plunging’ Kenya into chaos.
