The government of Kenya has come out to allay fears on the deteriorating relationship between Kenya and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after Deputy President William Ruto made a damning remark.

DP Ruto while speaking in Nyeri Tuesday morning joked that the country did not have a single cow within its borders and as such imported dairy commodities from other nations.

The statement rubbed many Congolese the wrong way with leaders of the Central Africa country castigating DP Ruto over reckless statement that they termed it as ‘disrespect’.

Kenya on the other side has been forced to respond to the remarks that ‘triggered negative reactions among business community in DRC.

“attention has been drawn to the Kenya Embassy in Kinshasa, regarding remarks on DRCs agriculture sector attributed to Mr. William Ruto on the political campaign trail in Kenya,” reads the statement in part.

“The Kenya Embassy wishes to reiterate that the government and the people of Kenya share a deep and respectful historical relationship stretches back to the independence of our respective countries, ” Ambassador Dr. George Masafu said.

“The embassy reassures the government and people of the DRC that the Government of Kenya Will continue encouraging the citizens of both our countries to continue engaging and building strong partnerships especially at this historic moment when DRC prepares to join the East African Community, ” he added.

Kenyans led by ODM leader Raila Odinga have asked the DP to apologize to the people of DRC and some have even shared videos of cows grazing in fields of DRC.

Good evening Sir @WilliamsRuto . Izo ni ngombe zetu,Masisi DRC. We have in Masisi around 400 000 cows without mentioning Ituri,South-Kivu, Tanganyika and Haut-Katanga.
