Gov’t Warns Musicians Ahead of 2022 Campaigns

As the country enters a season of crazy campaigns ahead of the 2022 general elections, the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO), a state agency mandated to administer overall administration and enforcement of copyright and related rights, has issued an advisory to musicians and artists wishing to be involved or compose campaign music to politicians.

Through a statement, KECOBO has asked artists to ensure they act very professional to avoid getting frustrated later over unpaid artwork noting that the previous engagements with politicians left many crying foul.

The artists have been advised to have professional contracts, get paid upfront when composing songs for the 2022 politicians, and not post the songs online before a full engagement has been done.

They have also been told to ensure their payment has been made before any live shows and rally performances.

This comes as many artists have been complaining of being duped by politicians and never getting a dime for work done during campaign periods.
