Police in Nyamira are investigating an incident in which a primary school teacher reportedly flogged a fourth grader at Riang’ombe primary school. A social media user tagged “Justice for Grade 4 pupil”
and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the teacher in question for violating the Department of Education’s corporal punishment policy.
The student was said to have been attacked last Sunday, and when his teachers determined his injuries were serious, his teachers closed the incident by detaining him in a dormitory and denying him treatment. The boy’s uncle, whose name cannot now be released to protect minors, gave him 107 lashes after his nephew reported that his clothes had been stolen from the dormitory. He complained that he was told he had received it.
The uncle said, “Yesterday after work I got a call. At around 7pm, my brother in Nairobi called me with information that his son had been injured at school and asked me to check the report. .”
“I asked his brother how he found out about his son’s injury. He told me that our last-born brother happened to be playing sports near Manga. He said we decided to visit him because there was a school nearby.” added.
He explained that the youngest brother tried to meet the boy, but was blocked by a teacher who monitored 2
hours a day and seemed to block anyone who wanted to visit the injured boy.
The uncle said some students who knew his youngest brother came and greeted him. “They informed him that our nephew had been brutally beaten by a teacher who beat him 107 times with a cane for no apparent reason.
The primary school student reportedly told his uncle that the injured student had washed and dried his clothes. But someone went and took the clothes. The uncle claims the boy went to report the theft of his clothes, and the teacher in question was angry and urged the other boy to pin the injured student, where he heavily canned him.
“He can’t walk. They claimed it was necessary for the attacker to apologize and prevent him from losing his job,” the uncle said. He further claimed that a student who witnessed the beating counted as many as 107 sticks on the student.
“I looked up the principal’s phone number and asked why the child was injured. The principal told me he didn’t know about the injury. He said he hadn’t been informed of the suspected injury,” said the angry uncle. “We took the boy to Nyamira hospital, stripped him, and found that the injuries were so severe that a huge amount of tissue had been cut from his buttocks as a result of his injuries.”
He explained that after learning about the incident, the boy’s parents desperately tried to talk to the school administrator, but their efforts were prevented by the teacher.
