Hundreds of supporters of Pastor Ezekiel Odero gathered at the Shanzu Law Courts as the controversial man of God awaited his arraignment. Pastor Odero, of the New Life Prayer Centre and Church, is facing charges stemming from alleged cult involvement in the Shakahola Forest massacre.
According to Coast Regional Commissioner Rhodah Onyancha, Pastor Odero was arrested in the Mavueni area over the deaths reported in morgues and/or institutions at his premises.
In a statement, Onyancha said the government had shut down the prayer centre and cleared out whoever was there.
DCI detectives questioned the preacher who commands a huge following over the alleged indoctrination of members a day before his arrest. His arraignment comes as the country still reels from the shocking discovery of bodies in Kilifi’s Shakahola forest.
The number of suspected victims of the Starvation Cult led by Pastor Paul Mackenzie has crossed the 100 mark as weeping relatives keep their hopes high for news of their loved ones.
Hundreds of bodies were found in the Shakahola forest near the coastal town of Malindi, and the cult leader Mackenzie was accused of driving his followers to death by preaching starvation as the way to God.
