Police in Malindi, Kilifi County, have conducted a raid on a religious sect group conducting prayers in Shakahola village.
During the operation, police retrieved four bodies and rescued 11 people from the twisted church ritual.
According to the police report, members of the church were starving to death in pretext to meet Jesus after being brainwashed by their pastor, Makenzie Nthenge of Good News International church.
The police incident report shows that a resident had reported a mass shallow grave of “victims of the brainwashing” totaling to 31 bodies in an unidentified place at Shakahola Forest within Langobaya in Malindi sub-county.
On April 14, 2023, a contingent under the command of SCPC and SCCIO Malindi visited the scene for fact-finding.
The team rescued 15 people, six of whom were emaciated and in critical condition, with the help of medics from Malindi.
While rescuing the victims, four of them died on the way, and the medics from Malindi sub-county hospital declared them posthumous.
The 11 rescued victims were admitted to Malindi sub-county hospital, and the deceased are yet to be identified.
This incident is a tragedy, and the authorities must investigate and hold accountable those responsible for brainwashing and endangering the lives of innocent people.
