Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga have sent their condolence messages to families of Enziu River tragedy.

Twenty church choir members were reported dead Saturday evening after bus they boarded plunged into an overflown river.

The Mwingi accident in Kitui county has shocked the nation and political leaders have broken their silence following the Saturday incident.

ODM leader who was busy with his bid to revive the football industry took time to wish well the families.

“My prayers and condolences go to the families of those we lost this afternoon when a bus carrying the Mwingi Catholic Church Choir plunged into River Enziu. May God grant the affected fortitude, and may the souls of the departed Rest In Eternal Peace,” he wrote.

DP Ruto on the other side took time off his busy Mt Kenya tour to send prayers to the affected.

“Our thoughts are with the families, their loved ones and friends of those who have perished in the tragic accident in Mwingi, Kitui County. Sending our prayers and speedy recovery to the survivors,” he said.

He also warned road users to be very careful during the rainy season which has caused havoc across the country.

“We urge motorists to be extra cautious especially now when we are experiencing heavy rains across the country,” he added.

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu had already arrived at the scene of the accident with reinforcement from Red Cross as residents watch in disbelief.

“This afternoon tragedy has struck Kitui County. A bus carrying Catholic faithfuls was swept away while attempting to cross a swollen river Enziu in Nguni, Mwingi. Rescue efforts are ongoing. So far there are 17 survivors and regrettably 21 bodies have been recovered,” she announced.

Kenyans have sympathized with the affected families and have sent their heartfelt condolences to the affected families. However, a section of Kenyans has castigated the Kitui leadership for not contructing a good bridge that can withstand all seasons.
